Birtenshaw College is located in Bolton and provides specialist further education for learners aged 16 to 25 with Special Educational Needs and Disability including physical disability, complex health needs, learning disability and autism.
The College was established in 2014 in collaboration with Bolton College and Bolton Council. The joint project was in response to the lack of local further education opportunities for disabled learners leaving school who could not access mainstream college courses because of the high level of support they needed. It has been an Independent Special Post 16 Provider since September 2016.
Birtenshaw College offers a unique further education opportunity providing a structured programme in which learning, therapeutic and enrichment activities are blended. There is a range of pathways supporting learners working at various levels to develop independent living and work related skills thorough accredited and non- accredited courses. Opportunities to learn skills for working life are available in the on-site small animal holding, community café and horticulture garden. Learners are also supported to access external work experience placements as appropriate.
The college currently supports learners from a number of local authorities and is centrally located with good transport links making it accessible to learners in the Greater Manchester and Lancashire regions.
Classes are small and taught by qualified and experienced teachers, who are specialists in supporting learners with Special Educational Needs and each class group is supported by a team of trained and experienced Learning Support Assistants.
Since opening, Birtenshaw College has grown year on year and further developments are planned. Learner numbers will increase again in the 2018 intake, the site is being reconfigured to accommodate their needs including the provision of additional classroom bases. The growth also provides the opportunity to further develop the curriculum offer to include a wider range of courses and opportunities.
We welcome enquiries or referrals and visits by appointment from parents/carers and professionals who want to know more about the college’s offer at any point in the year.
