When you visit the stunning, eco-friendly, 40 acre campus on the Dorset/Hampshire border it becomes apparent why this college is a first choice for parents and young adults with special educational needs.
Individual buildings linked by natural pathways through green open spaces and woodland give a sense of calm and wellbeing. Exclusive onsite facilities include a gym hall, heated indoor swimming pool, kitchen garden and purpose-built therapy building offering onsite specialist input from occupational, physiotherapy as well as complementary therapies such as massage, music and art.
Sheiling College provides personalised education programme to young adults aged 19 -25 with severe, complex and moderate learning disabilities, including those on the autistic spectrum. The college has a proven track record of working in partnership with students, their families and the local authority to deliver a curriculum that best meets their needs. This includes working towards nationally accredited qualifications and developing skills that enable students to reach their planned destinations.
An onsite speech and language therapist carries out a thorough assessment of every student on admission. Regular support is offered through individual or group sessions and indirectly through other members of staff, all of whom are experienced and highly trained in a range of communication approaches including Total Communication.
The positive behaviour support and nursing team provide direct support and guidance to ensure that a student’s health and wellbeing is paramount in their provision. This is further supported by Steiner inspired therapies such as eurythmy and colour therapy.
The students are included in all aspects of their education and make choices about their future plans and aspirations. Choices are valued and incorporated into their learning. This promotes independence and confidence whilst engaging in a social community environment. Small class groups, a high level of support and a varied, engaging curriculum both in and out of the classroom- offers the platform for success.
The curriculum is broad and includes the use of interactive technology and development of practical, independent living and vocational skills. This is supported by the innovative College Hub, a newly added facility which provides working kitchens, cafe, retail and office space where students can learn and practise their skills.
Young adults have access to an Independent Careers Advisor to assist them in making choices about their future. Appropriate offsite work placements in the community are available, including farming, house-keeping, retail and catering to help develop a wide range of skills.
Sheiling College provides quality education with a holistic and therapeutic approach delivered in surroundings that are hard to beat and supported by highly trained and motivated staff. The result is young adults who thrive in a safe and nurturing environment and, ultimately, move on successfully to the next stage of their lives.
